Plane Tracking with AR Foundation

Updated: Nov 19, 2020

AR Foundation provides mobile AR applications with horizontal plane tracking capability so many opportunities to create interesting spatial AR experiences.

This week, I explored AR Foundation to create a quick playful AR experience using its plane tracking in space, with the theme around our physical space and the city.

Getting lost while traveling to cities that are new can sometimes be frustrating. Nowadays we have GPS to assist with street map and directions to places, but years ago, I wonder how people can easily find their ways around new destinations. It reminds of many fairytales that tells stories of their characters doing different things to mark their paths so they can just follow these marks to find their way back. Some methods include: carving into tree trunks, drawing signs on rocks or road, or even dropping things along the way to accomplish this way finding task. This makes me think of creating a playful AR where users are able to drop food along their way to somewhere to create a trail full of these cute 3D food models. What will make it even more "city" related is that the food item getting dropped will reference the city they are visiting. For example, if they are in New York City, maybe they can drop pizza slices; or if they are in Tokyo, they can be dropping pieces of sushi, etc.

Here are some photos of the playful experience.
